BOOK DISCUSSION with Mark Schenker Last Orders by Graham Swift
Thursday, December 17, 2009 @ 7:00 pm
"Human beings are human insofar as they bear witness to the inhuman."
Giorgio Agamben, Remnants of Auschwitz
Join us for our Fall Book Discussion Series entitled Trauma and Transcendence. One function of literature is to reveal the simplicity and complexity of our collective humanity in the record - whether public or private, historical or fictional - of an individual's response to inhumanity. In many literary works, the verbal engagement with the unspeakable can result in a depiction of trauma that may or may not be resolved by the power of art and imagination.
Yale Associate Dean Dr. Mark Schenker will lead the discussion of four novels that engage the issues of trauma and transcendence as they bear testament to, respectively, a dystopian future, American slavery, the Holocaust, and human mortality: The Handmaid's Tale (Margaret Atwood), Beloved (Toni Morrison), The Reader (Bernhard Schlink) and Last Orders (Graham Swift).
Part 4 of the series will focus on Last Orders by Graham Swift. This is a free program, and all are welcome to join. Add your voice to our lively discussion, led by our favorite literary expert, Mark Schenker! Registration is required. Copies of all works will be provided to registered participants. To register or for more information: please call 389-3433, stop by our Circulation Desk, or email pvalsecchi@ci.woodbridge.ct.us.
